HD Renewable Energy Japan invests in a 50MW / 104MWh BESS project in Hokkaido, Japan, alongside Brawn Capital

March 25, 2025
HD Renewable Energy Japan Co., Ltd. (“HDJP”) has entered into a Tokumei Kumiai interest purchase agreement with Brawn Capital, to acquire a majority interest in a 50MW / 104MWh battery energy storage system (“BESS”) project located in Sapporo, Hokkaido prefecture, Japan (“Helios I”). Project Helios I is expected to reach completion and operational launch by end of 2025. The construction and site maintenance will be undertaken by Hokkaido Electric. The project was developed by Manoa Energy, a renewable energy developer focused on Japan, managed by Brawn.
The project will contribute to achieving Japan’s two major goals of grid stability and decarbonization. Amid rising solar curtailment in Japan, BESS projects such as Helios I are critical to stabilize supply by storing excess energy generated during periods of high production and discharging during peak demand. By addressing the intermittent nature of renewable energy, BESS projects go hand in hand with the government’s objectives to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 and increase the share of renewable energy to at least 40% of the energy mix by 2040.
"This project marks an important step forward in HDRE’s commitment to advancing energy storage solutions that support Japan’s renewable energy transition," said Jason Chou, General Manager of HDRE. "We are excited to collaborate with Brawn on this initiative, which enables us to accelerate our activities in this critical area. Together, we aim to deliver meaningful impact and contribute to a more sustainable energy future for the country." Brawn Capital is an established investment manager focused on renewables in Asia, with an established track record in Japan’s energy transition. Through its local team, Brawn is actively developing over 1GW of BESS projects to enhance grid stability and accelerate decarbonization.
“We are pleased to partner with HDJP on this landmark BESS project, reinforcing Brawn Capital’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure investment in Japan,” said Scott Reinhart, CEO of Brawn Capital. “This transaction underscores our ability to develop high-quality battery energy storage solutions that enhance grid stability and accelerate Japan’s renewable energy transition. With this successful partnership, Brawn Capital remains focused on expanding its energy storage portfolio and advancing next-generation clean energy investments across the Asia-Pacific region.”
Finergreen, a leading financial advisory firm specialized in energy transition, acted as Brawn Capital’s exclusive sell-side advisor, reinforcing its commitment to supporting sustainable energy initiatives in Japan. Finergreen has provided critical support in structuring the transaction, managing the due diligence process and coordinating the negotiation process between the parties.
“We are glad to have participated in accelerating the deployment of BESS in Japan. This innovative technology is critical to enhance grid stability and further decarbonize the country’s energy mix,” said Rohan Singh, Managing Partner Asia at Finergreen. “We see this transaction as a stepping stone to more involvement in BESS projects not only in Japan but also in other countries in APAC.”
