Senior Electrical Engineer – BESS Projects

Location: Tokyo.

Department: Engineering.

Reports To: Head of Engineering.

Position Overview:

With the rapid growth of renewable energy in Japan, we are seeking a highly capable Senior Electrical Engineer to lead the design and execution of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. We are especially looking for someone with experience in coordinating with aggregators and supporting energy market participation.

Key responsibilities

Design & Engineering

• Lead electrical design for BESS projects, including single-line diagrams, cable routing, grounding design, etc.

• Specify and select PCS (Power Conversion System), transformers, switchgear, protection relays, and other electrical equipment.

• Ensure compliance with domestic and international standards (e.g., JIS, Electrical Utility Engineering Standards, IEC) and utility interconnection requirements.

Aggregator Coordination & Market Integration

• Act as the technical point of contact for aggregators participating in the JEPEX, capacity market, balancing market, etc.

• Review EMS/SCADA system requirements and ensure communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, TCP/IP, IEC 61850) meet aggregator specifications.

• Support implementation of charge/discharge schedules and real-time dispatch control logic.

• Work with aggregators and utilities during testing and commissioning to validate system performance and data communication.

Project Execution Support

• Coordinate technical matters with EPCs, manufacturers, utilities, and aggregators.

• Review vendor documentation, technical drawings, and specifications.

• Provide engineering support throughout the full project lifecycle – from design and procurement to construction, commissioning, and handover.

Technical Leadership

• Participate in design reviews, FATs, SATs, etc.

• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in the field.

• Promote technical knowledge sharing across the team.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Required

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or related field.

• Class 2 Chief Electrical Engineer License.

• At least 8 years of experience in electrical engineering related to power infrastructure, with 3+ years in BESS or renewable energy projects.

Proven experience in one or more of the following:

• PCS/inverter and protection systems.

• High voltage/extra-high voltage substation design.

• Utility interconnection negotiation and coordination.

• EMS/SCADA design and communication protocols (Modbus, IEC 61850, etc.)

Preferred

• Hands-on experience working with aggregators or in VPP settings.

• Familiarity with power system analysis tools (e.g., power flow, fault analysis, protection coordination).
